Becquerel family
The Becquerel were a family of noted French physicists. Antoine Becquerel (1788-1878), born in Châtillon-sur-Loing (today Châtillon-Coligny), studied the phenomenon of diamagnetism, but he is particularly known for his work in the field of electrochemisty, notably for his invention of a polarized dual liquid battery (1829). He was named to the French Academy of Sciences in 1829. Edmond Becquerel (1820-1891), born in Paris, was the son of Antoine Becquerel. He conducted a photographic study of the sun, proving the existence of Fraunhofer rays in its untraviolet areas (1842). With others, he developed thermodynamic coupling and studied the magnetic properties of minerals and the phenomena of phosphorescence. He was named to the Academy of Sciences in 1863. Henri Becquerel (1852-1908), the son of Edmond Becquerel, was born in Paris. He studied effects of X-rays and fluorescence on uranium salts and discovered the phenomenon of radioactivity (1896) as well as the ionizing properties of new radiations. He was named to the French Academy of Sciences in 1889 and, in 1903, with Pierre and Marie Curie, was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics.
